THE STORY OF THE PRODIGAL SON

THE STORY OF THE PRODIGAL SON

I am sharing a poem from my latest book, GOD- FEARING ONES: POEMS THAT INSPIRE

THE PRODIGAL SON

Jesus told a parable to his disciples and followers,

About a young son who asked his father for his inheritance.

Leaving his father and older brother, he set off for a distant country,

And squandered all of his wealth wildly.

After spending every cent of his money,

A severe famine occurred in the country.

Being in dire need, he sought a job for his survival,

He was sent to a citizen’s field to feed pigs, and endured starvation.

He recollected when he finally regained his sense,

Even his father’s hired servants had food in excess.

While he, in a strange place was starving to death.

He decided to return to his Father’s home and repent.

So he got up and made his way to his father in the morning.

From a long way off, his father saw him coming.

His father was filled with compassion for him.

He ran to his son, threw his arms around him. and kissed him.

The son said, he had sinned against his father and heaven,

And was no longer worthy to be called his son.

The father turned to his servants and said to dress him.

Put on the best robe and sandals, and on his finger put a ring.

He told them to go out and kill the fatted calf

So they could have a feast and celebrate with the staff.

For his young son was dead and was alive again.

He thought he was lost, but he found him.

.

When the older son who was in the field went home,

Heard loud music and dancing, and he asked what was going on.

A servant replied that his brother returned safe and sound.

And his father was celebrating because his son was lost and found.

The older brother became angry and refused to go in.

So his father went out and pleaded with him.

He told his father that for all the years he never disobeyed him and slaved.

He never gave him even a young goat to celebrate.

He killed the fatted calf for the son who wasted his life saving.

The father consoled the older son saying he was always there for him,

For him, he was leaving everything, but he had a reason for celebrating,

Because his brother was lost and was found again.

The parable of the prodigal son is a lesson for us,

On the importance of repentance and forgiveness.

God's love for us does not depend on our faithfulness;

God loves us unconditionally, no matter how far we stray from Him.

Though we may be sinful and unrighteous,

He is always willing to take us back and forgive us.

To all His children who show that they need Him.

God, Our Heavenly Father, will always be faithful and loving.
