IMPORTANCE OF A BOOK COVER AND TITLE
THE BOOK TITLE
Choose a short catchy title. Avoid long titles that do not show up well on the cover, and can turn off readers.
It’s that simple.
THE BOOK COVER
A well-designed book cover is a marketing asset for writers and can lead to visibility and increasing sales.
Choose a design that entices readers, conveys the mood and theme of a book, and will attract sales. A book cover, with layout, typography, imagery, color, and format, all play important roles to bring the design together.
Whether you design the cover yourself, or you hire an expert cover designer, you should take note of these five elements.
Five Elements of Success
1.Images
2.Typography
3.Color
4.Layout
Format - A final element of consideration is the format and size of the cover. The popular book sizes are 5” x 8” and 6” x 9’. You will need an eBook cover as well as a paperback cover. You may even want a hardback cover, but that is up to you.
Book covers usually need to convey two key pieces of information — the book title and the author’s name.
The title or author name can be the main imagery for the cover. But often, the designer incorporates an additional photo or illustration into the layout to convey the theme or mood of the book.
Images should be eye-catching and linger in the memory.
They can be obtained from Shutterstock.
Your designer can also mix and match fonts to create unique, eye-catching typography for your title and name.
The prominence, arrangement, and nature of a cover image is up to you and your designer, and it pays to be creative. The more unique you can make your cover, the more likely it is to stand out among millions of competitors.
The aim of a book cover is to grab and hold a reader’s attention.
To save money, I only pay my designer for the Kindle Cover.
When I am publishing the Paperback, I use the Amazon Cover Creator to do the full cover. It gives an accurate size, and spine, for the number of pages I submit.
You will need to have on hand your photo, a very short biography, and an outstanding blurb to complete the back cover. You can use the Kindle Cover for the front.
Looking forward to your questions.
