A True Tale - I am Cancer Free
The photo at the side is to celebrate my freedom from Ovarian Cancer with which I was afflicted in 2005. Those of you who have read and reviewed my memoir, have had loved ones go through similar ordeals and you understand what it is like when a person has been diagnosed with cancer. I wrote a poem which simplifies my story, but at the same time, it reveals enough.
I am happy to say, and I thank God, that I am Cancer Free for the past ten years.[almost eleven]
A TRUE TALE
I awoke dazed, confused, where could I be?
Suddenly recalling I just had surgery.
Hooked up to machines, nurses surrounding my bed.
I closed my eyes and covered my head.
The doctor entered, her head bowed,
She uttered that I needed to go abroad,
The surgery was incomplete and she was sorry.
A malignant tumor was discovered in my left ovary.
My husband and I gasped in disbelief.
Fate had bestowed on me such grief.
We thought it was a simple hysterectomy.
I now needed chemotherapy and more surgery.
We immediately flew to Miami,
Where our daughter arranged for me to see
An oncologist at a cancer center;
No other doctor could have been better.
His diagnosis and treatment were very exact,
He prescribed three chemos to stop the cancer attack.
He operated and removed successfully
Every piece of the tumor that almost killed me.
I am now at home with my beloved family.
I now know how much they really love me.
They were at my side as far as I recall,
God was most faithful throughout it all.
Why I wrote the Book ‘I am Cancer Free”
Almost eight years after my battle with Ovarian Cancer, I decided to write the book, “I am Cancer Free.”
My thoughts were that I was still alive, although my doctor in Trinidad had given up on me eight years before when she performed a hysterectomy and could not remove the tumour. I believed that my story would help others in similar situations to get other doctors’ opinions, even if it means going to another country to do so. Do not rely on the first one.
For eight years, the feeling that I would die remained with me. Even after the doctor in Miami declared me Cancer Free after seven months of treatment and surgery, I asked him, “How long do I have?” He looked at me in the eye and told me, “Brenda, I just told you that you are cancer free. Enjoy living.”
In my book, I spoke about what I did after each chemotherapy session, which was always on a Friday. Although my body was filled with Taxol and Carboplatin, I felt energized and wanted to go shopping and eat in restaurants. I never lost my appetite. I could have eaten any type of food I wanted. I had no pain until Sunday, when I experienced bone pains, which the doctor told me that I would get.
It has been ten years since I am Cancer Free.

"A monument to the author's successful career in banking as she rises from a bank clerk to several managerial positions.
on September 16, 2014, by A. Persaud
Format: Paperback
"My Life as a Banker" is an autobiographical account of the author's experiences during her career in the bank. She sets the stage by talking about her childhood and family and how her early experiences shaped her outlook on life.
Throughout her working life, the author always showed extreme devotion to her job and was constantly rewarded with praise, exciting new opportunities and challenges, as well as job promotions. She was able to succeed in her chosen career through sheer hard work and determination accompanied by her natural intelligence. Her achievements were always recognized by her superiors and she was rightfully rewarded. She started out as a bank clerk and eventually rose through the ranks assuming various managerial positions.
The author attributes her success to her faith and belief in God. She would pray for wisdom and guidance every time she faced a challenging situation. Whenever she had a problem, she prayed about it and the problem was miraculously solved. She continually speaks of the influence of God in her life and in the life of her family. The strength of her faith helped her to overcome any diversities that entered her life.
This book is important in its portrayal of life in the author's native country, Trinidad, in the latter part of the twentieth century.
It records some historical events through which the author lived. One such event is the takeover of the government by Muslimeens in 1990 and the scare throughout the country. Other significant events are the changes in the banking system and the bank's attitude to its employees throughout the years. In addition, the book shows how a young, determined girl just out of high school was able to have a highly successful career in the area of her choice and live a fulfilling life.
The book describes not only the author's work, but the fabulous vacations she was able to enjoy during her vacation time.
Her vacations always left her refreshed and ready to face new challenges.
Overall, the author views her life in a positive sense and is appreciative of the wonderful times and good luck she has experienced throughout her career. She is grateful for all the good that has occurred in her life and is thankful to God.
The book is written in a clear and easy to read style and can be enjoyed by people of all ages."

Inspiring and eminently interesting story
By Kato's Revenge on June 26, 2016
Format: Paperback
For those of us who are not in the banking industry, and for me, especially living in a country where the capital is the financial hub of the country (perhaps the world) you might think a story called My Life As A Banker would be too dry to enjoy.
Author Brenda Mohammed has written quite a few books across different genres. This book is a relatively quick read but readers can be taken along her life's journey as they turn the pages.
I found myself more interested in the 'Life Worth Living' elements of the book. I congratulate her hard work which allowed her to work in the banking industry and get promoted. But I was more interested in the personal side of things, for example how she met her husband (that's an excellent segment of the book) and also attaining her strict father's support for the marriage.
The author's approach to writing this memoir is direct and therefore one imagines this is how she would speak in real life. But the tale is told with such verve and energy, it is an enjoyable book that people will find much to like.
The real life stories contained within are things we can all relate to. Things such as ending up in a great city like Toronto, but being sick at the time and told 'you shouldn't go out then'. But this is not the author's approach to life. If you have read her Travel Memoir With Pictures, you will understand what an accomplished traveller this lady is.
There's some surprisingly gory scenes in the book, tempered by some poignant sadness around certain family members, as well as the central theme of how the author made her living in the banking sector.
It's an interesting and very readable memoir from one of the more creative authors out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars for My Life as a Banker
By Fifty Sheds of Books on July 7, 2016

My Life As A Banker is a fascinating, intimate story. The author has an engaging writing style that draws you into the story and you feel as though she is talking directly to you, the reader. There is a nice balance between the professional and the personal and while I found the professional aspects rewarding, the highlight for me was reading about the author's interesting life.
The social history aspects of the book also fascinated me, particularly the descriptions of life in Trinidad and I would image that this memoir will serve as an important document for social historians in years to come.
This might sound strange to say about a book with banker in the title, but the author demonstrates quite vividly that there are far more important things than money in life.

It was interesting to see how banking was in another country, than the United States. Being a banker myself, I found it interesting, and could relate to several tasks that are mentioned. I like the way her family was woven through the story.

5.0 out of 5 starsThoughtful and detailed account of defeating the most terrible of diseases
ByKato's Revenge on May 21, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
I am Cancer Free is an extremely positive title for something that is so terrifying to pretty much all of us, were we to be diagnosed with it.
No illness is pleasant, but surely cancer is one of the very worst, and although survival rates are increasing all the time depending on the type of cancer concerned, it is good to know that the author, who thankfully defeated this terrible disease, overcome it in order to pen this extremely good read.
From a carefree life, visiting friends and relatives, through to the initial concerns and then onto the diagnosis, the author takes us on a journey in this book. But potential readers shouldn't be put off by the subject matter. The author has bravely chose to share her experience with the reader. It is never negative, although some of it is very harrowing to read.
The description of the subsequent and very necessary operation which resulted in the author regaining her full health is a case of just enough information. There's no need for gory details and we don't get them. In essence, the author has the balance right between info-dumping and info-giving.
Again, it's a book that educates and informs.
Thank goodness for medical insurance. In the UK, we are fortunate that the NHS provides many life saving treatments. I do hope the government (s) wake up and spend money on research to defeat this terrible disease in all its forms.
Well done to the author on the beating of this disease and in the creation of this book.

Remarkably detailed, and poignant description of the author's experiences as she was diagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer.
By Arabella Persaud on June 19, 2014
Format: Paperback|Verified Purchase
This true story should be read by every person who has been diagnosed with or who has ever suffered from cancer. Their loved ones will also benefit from reading this autobiographical account. The author has an impressive memory for details and gives an excellent account of everything that she went through during that trying period from her diagnosis to the successful treatment of the disease. She narrates, in depth, all her experiences during her treatment, including her personal feelings, her understandable fears, and even financial matters. Displaying an exceptionally lucid memory, she remembers every single person who supported her during that time period and every single little detail including the hurricane that struck Miami after her second chemotherapy session and the inconveniences incurred with regard to electricity in the house and gas for the car. She also remembers in detail every restaurant in which she ate in Miami and everyone who visited her. Her memory of every important date is extremely remarkable.
During all the upheavals, the author never lost her faith in God. Her undaunting faith upheld her and comforted her during this dark period of her life. Her story clearly demonstrates that faith in God surmounts all obstacles.
The book makes easy ready and the style is almost conversational. One gets the feeling that the author is speaking directly to the reader. It is an intensely personal narration and I recommend this book highly.

Brenda successfully awakens our spirit and motivates us to focus on what’s important around us in this powerful read.
By Jen L. on August 29, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Brenda inspires us through this life opening read. Focusing on the 8 verses in Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, she emphasizes how there is a time, a season, for everything; “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing, etc…”
She breaks down each of these verses, and explains them via her own life experiences. A book of reflection, and what is truly important. Simplifying what we have always complicated.
How many of us are prepared for the eventuality of leaving this planet, leaving our body, leaving our loved ones? “My father was one of those who knew that he was going to die and was well prepared.” If you thought along these lines EVERYDAY, how would this change your behavior? Living each day like it was your last… Brenda successfully awakens our spirit and motivates us to focus on what’s important around us in this powerful read.

Thoughtful reflections on the meaning of verses 1 to 8 of Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 of the Bible
By Arabella Persaud on June 22, 2014
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
In her characteristic easy to read style, the author provides an insightful interpretation of the 8 verses of Ecclesiastes that were used in the famous song by the Byrds. Drawing on personal experiences, an astounding knowledge of the Bible, general observances and reflections on life, the author examines these verses and presents her interpretation in as clear and understandable a manner as possible. She narrates several stories from her own life to illustrate each verse and shows how her faith helps her to overcome many obstacles and to live a successful and happy life.
This is an inspiring book which clearly shows that when one applies the principles of the Bible to real life, one can get marvelous results. It is an uplifting book and should be read by anyone who wants to restore his or her faith in God or in life in general.

A true story told with pure intentions and true feelings
By Roma Sinanan on May 17, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
A true story told with pure intentions and deep feelings. It's simplicity and well scripted chapters grow into each other methodically and freely. The reader is impelled to move on with ease and comfort. There is a pervasive humility in each incident which truly reflects the author's character and personality. Her pride in her heritage and family ties touches deep into the soul and absorbs the attention of the reader. Personal circumstances told, reflect her openness to inform and tutor at the same time, what one can derive from challenges unexpected, if rooted in the trust one places in God.
The author's implicit belief in divine intervention summarizes her message. I have enjoyed, I have been touched and have had my personal convictions reiterated in this most interesting and soul searching book. I recommend it to all especially to you who in times when the clouds grow dark- the silver linings emerge to remind us of a light emerging on the other side. This is the author's story.

Live, breathe, share, laugh and love. Your time really is now. The other stuff doesn't matter.
By Kato's Revenge on September 25, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
Whilst Your Time is Now is a memoir with biblical undertones, I would like to split this review in two parts.
The story is about seizing the day, much like how Robin William's teacher wanted his class to do in Dead Poet's Society. I think we are all guilty to some extent about not seizing the day, seizing the moment. Then we reflect on such things and wonder why we weren't just a little bit braver. What would have been the worst thing that could have happened as a result of our actions? Whilst one book cannot hope to provide a satisfactory answer to such a question, it satisfies many of the author's search for meaning in her life. I am splitting my review not out of disrespect to the author's beliefs, it's just that my views are a little different and so I should be clear about that from the outset.
This is not the first memoir I have read by the author but it's probably the most interesting one - even though the others were extremely readable books in their own right. However, whilst there is some overlap, it still feels like a new read.
I especially enjoyed the part where Canadian missionaries approached the author's parents, seeking to adopt her. Canada is cold, more cold than the author's native Trinidad and Tobago, and it's clear she was happy not to be taken away. Her family is a large one and it is uplifting to read how much she loves her family.
Later elements talk about reaping what we sow. This is very true. As I have aged I think I have mellowed a lot - it's more likely I will say something nice and supportive rather than be snidey or cruel. There may be times to do that, but overall the message is 'look, life is short - be nice to each other'.
I don't know what would have been made of me if I had been there to experience the sermon on the mount. We all have complexities to ourselves, but without them, we would not be who we are. One hopes that if I do face that final judgement, I won't be considered a bad person, even though I am not fully into the beliefs referenced in this book.
It's refreshing that one of the author's Directors commented on her being 'a Real Christian'. In England we are supposed to live in a Christian country, yet the display of crosses around our necks is considered controversial and possibly offensive. This is nonsensical to me. So long as no-one wishes to hurt me, I have no issue with them.
Perhaps my favourite line in the entire book is 'A highly evolved person is free from worry and depression and radiates calmness'. So true - and if only we could all live like that, impressing positive thoughts on those we interact with and yes, profess to love (even via blood or relationship status) the world would be a better place.
So forget the nonsense of a busy, noisy world. Most of the stuff we worry about is a waste of our time. We are better than that and should act accordingly.
Read this book and feel uplifted.

Top Reviews for Memoirs of Dr Andrew Moonir Khan - A great Educator in Trinidad and Tobago.

5.0 out of 5 starsGenuinely Interesting and useful
By Peter Rajkumar on March 31, 2016
Format: Paperback
There is a need for books like this one- books which document the struggle of the first generations of immigrants and their children to carve a place in their society , and then provide the foundation for the next generation to achieve even greater success. In broad terms, this is general knowledge. What is valuable in this book is the step by step description detailing the road- map by which one successful educator did so. What is also appreciated is the incidental description of day to day life in pre-independence Trinidad. Congratulations - post- humous though they have to be- to Dr. Khan for the foresight in documenting his memoirs for the benefit of those who -generations later - are curious about the journey. Congratulations also to the biographer -his daughter -Brenda - for identifying the need for these memoirs to be published - and to receive a wider audience than just his family, as well as undertaking the task of bringing the book into being. I would recommend this book for its insights into the secret of success and its transmission to later generations.
5.0 out of 5 starsNational hero

Format: Paperback
The memoirs of Dr. Andrew Moonir Khan presented by his daughter, author, Brenda Mohammed, records the life story of Dr. Khan as told by himself in the memoirs he so graciously bequeathed to all of us who knew and loved him.
This reviewer has had a teacher-pupil relationship with Dr. Khan and has benefitted tremendously from the exposure to high standards in the educational and spiritual atmosphere he provided.
The memoirs tell the story of a man burnt by the vicissitudes of life, challenging and bitter times, yet has emerged renewed, reinvigorated, refined and restored- a life exemplary in every way.
The autobiography is a true reflection of the author's love for and belief in truth, his high standards of etiquette and his pursuit of model writing skills in English Language.
The simple, comprehensive, yet sophisticated presentation leaves the reader fascinated and curious to know more of a life that offers much to be emulated.
The physical and emotional traumas shared in the book bring deep feelings of sympathy and empathy. Overcoming early childhood bad experiences through divine intervention strengthens the reader's faith in God. The travails of a teacher aspiring to ascend the ladder of progress met with misplaced opposition inspires dignified patience.
The unreserved and unconditional dedication to family life inspires noble parenting. The zest "to follow knowledge like a singing star beyond the reach of human thought" inspires a passionate mind.
To live the life that God expects us to live, as the author's work demonstrates, inspires discipline and devotion. Nothing less is expected, as the book in its lifelike and meaningful way depicts the story of "a great man, a true exemplar, a national hero."
5.0 out of 5 starsA glimpse into the life of Trinidad in the early twentieth century ensconced in the autobiography of a great educator
By Arabella Persaud on January 28, 2015
Format: Kindle Edition
This book is a fascinating account of the life and career of Dr. Andrew Moonir Khan as he advances from teacher to Headmaster, to Inspector of schools and later Senior inspector of schools before his retirement in 1965 at the required age of 60.
The book is put together by one of his daughters, Brenda, who serves as narrator. The story is actually told in the first person, in Dr. Khan's own words, as he relates his experiences throughout his life and career in the island of Trinidad.
Born to parents who emigrated from India in the late nineteenth century, Dr. Khan describes his simple yet idyllic childhood in the countryside.
He loved nature and enjoyed a closeness with his parents. The era in which he grew up was one of zero technology. There was no electricity or any modern day conveniences in those days. However, his childhood was happy and he fondly remembers the stories told to him by his mother.
Dr. Khan recalls his first adventures in school and his natural abilities. However, he was unable to attend school for four years at one stage because of an unexplained illness for which his mother eventually found a cure. He finally was able to return to school and excelled in his studies. Dr. Khan eventually started working under the pupil-teacher system in Trinidad and rose through the ranks very quickly.
In this book, we see the difficulties of operating a school in a society that did not value education. It was the teacher's responsibility to collect children and take them to school. As a young teacher, Dr. Khan had to awake early to collect the boys and girls of the village to take them to school. This was not an easy task. However, it was necessary for him to keep his job. With hard work and sheer determination,
Dr. Khan's career advanced at a rapid rate.
Dr. Khan's rise from humble beginnings to successful educator is inspiring. The advances in his career are amazing. His family life is interesting. His words of wisdom are everlasting and should be adopted by the younger generation. The world- view portrayed in the book is fascinating. The book documents the changes in Trinidad from a colonial nation to an independent country in 1962. The progress throughout the country during the period of Dr. Khan's life is evident in the change of his living conditions.
Dr. Khan remains humble and acknowledges that his success could not have come from himself alone. He praises his wife, his family, and his constant faith in God. After his retirement, he achieved what he had always dreamed of. He wrote and submitted a thesis to the Florida State Christian University and was granted a Ph.D. degree in Education. He also spent most of his time working on numerous committees at the Marabella Presbyterian Church and the Synod. Not only was he a tireless educator, but he was a firm believer in God and in doing what was right and just. He kept on contributing to society all he could until his death in 1975.
Everyone can benefit from reading this autobiography and seeing how one simple man's extraordinary faith, struggle and determination allowed him to achieve more than he had ever thought possible. The book clearly shows us that success is attainable for anyone who is willing to reach for it. I recommend this book highly

Dr. Khan's memoirs highlight his professional and personal accomplishments at a time when education was not a seen as a valuable resource. Reading about his life back in the 1950's and how much he accomplished in his field is personally inspiring. His writing remains relevant today such as his views on education, women, family and hard work. The author did a good job in organizing his life events and inspiring letters written about him. This book makes me believe I can do anything once I set my mind to it

I picked up this book, as my father has been diagnosed with stage four cancer. I wanted to read this from the perspective of someone who has been there so that I could better support him.
What I will say is that everyone should read this book. We are all touched by this horrible and untimely disease, and reading the author's story helped me understand a little more how my father might be feeling. Whilst I know he will never be cancer free - I wanted to understand more.
It's emotional, heartfelt, honest and transparent. The author has told the story with true authenticity.
Highly highly recommended!

Book Reviews of My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living
Review by Hannah Howe [Five Stars]
My Life as a Banker
By Fifty Sheds of Books on July 7, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition

I am Cancer Free: A Memoir - Five Star Review
FIVE STAR REVIEW
Thoughtful and detailed account of defeating the most terrible of diseases
By Kato's Revenge on May 21, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
In the UK, we are fortunate that the NHS provides many life-saving treatments. I do hope the government (s) wake up and spend money on research to defeat this terrible disease in all its forms.
Well done to the author on the beating of this disease and in the creation of this book.

Five Star Review for My Life as a Banker: A Life worth Living - A Memoir
5.0 out of 5 starsInspiring and eminently interesting story

Five Star Review by Kato's Revenge

Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter - A Memoir
Here is another Review:
"Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite
Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter by Brenda Mohammed is an interesting memoir where the author shares with readers her moments after retirement and how it is a time when everyone should sit back and enjoy life. After reading this book, no one will dread retirement; they will all look forward to it and use that time to enjoy the beauty of life, spend more time with the family, and experience their unconditional love. Retiring from the job does not mean one retires from life because one gets time to appreciate the beauty of unlimited time and use it effectively by doing things they missed out on doing while they were working.
The book is uplifting as it makes everyone who is going to retire look forward to it. The author's experiences and adventures after retirement give readers ideas on how to handle their lives in a good and happy way after retiring from their jobs. Brenda Mohammed shows by example how one's attitude can make a difference to everything and life can be enjoyed at any age, irrespective of whether you are young or not.
The memoir is simple and chronicles the author's life and events, taking readers into her space. The memoir is a good read; readers can connect well with what the author says and the events and experiences in her life, and the way she handles life is tangible. The words of wisdom from Dr Murdoch quoted at the end of the book are very inspirational and will help readers look at life in a positive way. An interesting book for all those who are going to retire from their jobs and want to know how to handle life after that.

Has proved to be as good an writer as she was a banker. You cannot keep a multi-talented person down.

Five Star Review of Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter - A Memoir
A well-written chronicle of the author's experiences and adventures since her retirement from a long career in the bank August 26, 2014 Format: Paperback
This inspiring book tells of the many adventures experienced by the author after retiring from a banking career. She talks about her new career in the insurance business and narrates, with meticulous detail, the many wonderful experiences in her new life including the birth of her grandchildren, her meeting of new friends, her travels abroad, and her continued enjoyment of life. For her, life certainly did not stop at retirement.
Throughout the book, the author demonstrates a positive outlook on everything that happens in her life. Not only did she endure wonderful experiences, but she also had a bout with cancer and a terrible accident in Miami. She interprets these negative events in a positive light by using them to show how her faith helped her to overcome these obstacles.
The author's appreciation of life is evident as she treasures every moment with her family and the time she shares with them. As in her previous books, the author once again exhibits a remarkable memory for details as she provides a meticulous description of all her activities since retirement. The style is simple and readable.
The book shows that life certainly does not end when one retires. Life continues and one must live with a positive and determined spirit to continue experiencing the joy of life and to discover one's hidden talents. I enjoyed the positive spirit shown by the author in this book. She demonstrates that it is one's attitude that counts towards one's enjoyment of life. This book is recommended for all retirees or persons contemplating retirement.

We booked in at the Adam’s Mark Hotel where we had reservations. It was a fantastic hotel with four restaurants and a night-club. Some of our friends from Trinidad stayed in that same hotel.
There were buffet lunches with a wide spread of dishes.
The hotel was located on the 16th Street shopping mall with free mall rides every minute of the day and we took full advantage of that to do some more shopping. There was a cinema nearby and we attended a show on Sunday. When we returned to the hotel some of the agents from my agency who were staying at another hotel came to visit me at the Adam’s Mark Hotel.
On Sunday night the MDRT Welcome reception was held at the Stadium at the Invesco Field which is the football field of the Denver Broncos. The Adam’s Mark Hotel was one of the hotels reserved by MDRT to be a meeting place for members to be transported to that Stadium. Dozens of buses pulled up at the hotel to take us to our destination. When we arrived there, popular music bands entertained us. There were lots to eat and drink. It was remarkable to see agents from every part of the world having such a good time together. I met many of my other friends from other agencies and we enjoyed the night together.
At the Conference, on all three days, the speakers held our attention with their dynamic presentations. There was a young teacher who won the Teacher of the Year award in America. He said that he wrote a book and sent it to Oprah Winfrey. She invited him on her show, spoke about the book and held the book close to her heart. The next day his book was Number One in America. He used the royalties to open a chain of schools in America. I wondered if I could be so lucky if I submitted my book to her. Almost all of the speakers were afflicted with cancer and survived, or had a loved one who had it and died. Despite that they were all highly successful.
In our spare time we took bus tours of Denver City and the Rocky mountains. We visited Buffalo Bill’s grave and Red Rock Canyon. We met lots of friends from Trinidad and other parts of the world and had dinner with some of them. It was a remarkable and memorable trip.
